TOLEDO COLLABORATIVE FOREST SCHOOL

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Toledo Collaborative Forest School (TCFS) is a small, mom-led forest school co-op in the Toledo, Ohio area.
We gather weekly in the woods for child-led play, deep nature connection, and authentic community—together as families.

What is your educational philosophy?
TCFS is a child-led, play-based forest school homeschool co-op focused on holistic development: physical, social-emotional, cognitive, and a deep connection to nature.
We prioritize free play, risk-taking (climbing, tools, fire, water), creativity, problem-solving, resilience, and wonder. There is no forced academics or rigid curriculum—learning emerges from children’s curiosity and the rhythms of the seasons.
How does TCFS practice child-led learning?
Child-led learning is at the heart of our approach. We structure sessions so that roughly 60–70% of the time follows the children’s interests and emerging curiosities, while 30–40% includes gentle adult guidance.
Each session uses a simple “sandwich” structure:
-
The bread (opener and closer): Short, age-appropriate adult-led routines to gather and reflect as a group.
-
The filling: The bulk of the session, driven by what the children notice, wonder about, and want to explore in the woods.
We are fellow parents learning right alongside our children—not professionally trained Forest School practitioners. We model curiosity together, turn to field guides or quick lookups when exciting discoveries appear, and build our knowledge as a community over time. We plan ahead when we can (for example, guiding the group to the pond when spring peepers are calling), but we embrace the organic flow of the woods.
New skills or games are introduced when they align with the group’s current interests and developmental stages. Children are never required to participate; they may join for as long or as short a time as they like, or continue exploring independently.
Our goal is a respectful, joyful space that honors children’s natural curiosity and autonomy while preserving the simple beauty of free play in the woods.
How is TCFS structured as a co-op, and how are parents involved?
TCFS is a true parent-led cooperative run by a small, dedicated community of mothers. Every participating mom actively helps co-create our forest school sessions—this is not a drop-off program.
Moms lead activities, contribute ideas and supplies, attend monthly moms’ meetings, and help shape the overall experience. This hands-on involvement builds confidence in outdoor education and fosters genuine community connections that often extend to playdates, camping trips, and beyond.
We strive for unanimous decisions whenever possible. When needed, we use majority vote, with our program director helping guide choices to stay true to our shared vision.
Why does TCFS require a biological woman (mom) to attend with each child?
We are a small, intimate group that gathers weekly in the woods. Our model intentionally creates space for both the children and the parents to build friendships together.
We require a biological woman to be the registered attending adult so that moms can connect around the shared realities and joys of biological womanhood and motherhood in a supportive outdoor setting. This creates space for 'mom-friends' who understand those experiences firsthand. Dads (and other family members) are always welcome to join sessions alongside mom—they bring valuable energy, perspectives, and support! However, the registered parent must be mom to preserve the heart of our community as a circle of outdoor-oriented mothers raising children together.
What is the group size and capacity?
We intentionally keep our group small—up to about 16 children total, across all ages. This allows us to foster deep, meaningful relationships, ensure safety, and customize activities to each child’s unique interests and needs.
Because of this, we rarely have openings and are selective when we do. We are currently full, with a waitlist/notification list for future openings.
What ages do you serve?
Our current participants range from 0–6 years old, though older children are welcome. Activities naturally adapt to the mixed ages present in our small group.

What are the session details and expectations?
-
Frequency: Once per week, on a day and time chosen collectively by current families each school year (not publicized until families are accepted).
-
Location: The same woodland space each week, just outside of Toledo, OH.
-
Weather: We meet year-round, rain or shine or snow! We rarely cancel for weather. Come prepared with good gear—layered clothing, waterproof outer layers, and sturdy boots make all the difference.
-
What to bring: Families provide their own snacks, water, and personal gear. Moms collaborate on shared supplies and activity materials.

How much does TCFS cost?
Co-op fees are kept extremely minimal—just enough to cover shared supplies, administrative expenses, and similar costs. In addition to the small fee, all registered parents contribute their time each week to help sessions run smoothly and make the group thrive. This time commitment is a core part of our cooperative model.

How does admissions work at TCFS?
We use a thoughtful, multi-stage application process to ensure strong philosophical alignment and long-term commitment in our small group. This isn’t first-come, first-served—it’s about finding the right fit for everyone.
When openings become available, the steps are:
-
Watch for open application periods (announced via our “Notify Me” list, Instagram, and Facebook).
-
Submit the application (initial interest form + reflective questions).
-
Participate in interviews and a collaborative conversation about our values and expectations.
-
Attend a trial session visit.
-
Sit in on a moms’ meeting.
-
If it’s a great match for both sides, we’ll extend an invitation to enroll.
How can I stay informed about future openings?
The best ways are:
-
Follow us on social media: Instagram (@tcforestschool) and Facebook (Toledo Collaborative Forest School).
Openings usually occur only when a current family relocates or chooses a different path.
Who is this program for (and who might it not suit)?
TCFS is ideal for homeschooling or nature-curious families who want a committed, immersive outdoor community where moms are active co-educators and co-learners. It suits those who value deep relationships, year-round nature connection, child-led play, and building resilience through real-world experiences.
Many families drawn to TCFS are inspired by movements and philosophies such as 1000 Hours Outside, Charlotte Mason, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia. Our year-round, play-based model in the woods supports the deep nature immersion and child-led wonder that these approaches often seek.
It may not be the best fit for families seeking a traditional preschool-style program, a drop-off program, a simple playdate-style enrichment activity, frequent weather cancellations, or minimal parent involvement.
